  • Cue-dependent memory
A strength of cue-dependent memory is that it has beneficial applications in Eyewitness Testimonies (EWTs)
  • Evidence
    • Fischer + Gieselman (1992) developed the Cognitive Interview (CI) as a police interview technique to improve the accuracy of a witnesses' memory of an event.
    • One of the 4 main elements in the CI is context-reinstatement, in which witnesses are asked questions that encourage them to mentally recreate the context of the crime (e.g. what was the weather like)
    • The aim here is to aid memory retrieval by inducing the same cues that were present during encoding.
  • Elaboration
This demonstrates the practical value of understanding how the absence of cues can lead to forgetting in a real life context, where accurate recall is essential.
  • Link
Subsequently, cue-dependent forgetting gains practical applicability.
