How were participants selected?
Students from the university volunteered and underwent psychological testing - emotionally stable ones were chosen and were randomly assigned roles of guards and prisoners
Procedure for guards
Given a uniform, woodenclub, handcuffs, and mirror shades - had to enforce prison rules
How long did the study last?
Meant to be 14 days but stopped after 6 days due to a threat to prisoners health
What happened on day 2?
Prisoners rebelled - ripped uniforms, shouted and swore, while guards retaliated with fireextinguishers
What were the findings in participants' behavior?
Guards used 'divide-and-rule' tactics, harassed and punished prisoners
Prisoners became depressed and anxious - 1 prisoner was released on the 1st day, and 2 more on the 4th day
What happened to prisoner 416?
Went on hunger strike - was put in solitary confinement and force fed
