    Serve wherein a player tosses the ball and strikes it over his/her head with an open hand. Also called a float serve or a top spin. It is the basic serve used in professional league

    Overhead serve where the ball is first tossed high up in the air, then the player makes a time approach and jumps to make contact with the ball, hitting it strong with a topspin. Most popular serve among college and professional teams
  • Spike/Attack
    Usually the third contact a team makes with the ball. The objective of attacking is to handle the ball so that it lands on the opponent's court and cannot be defended
  • Kill
    The slang term for an attack that is not returned by the other team thus resulting to a point
  • Block
    The most important skills in volleyball, which is seldom taught to students in regular physical education
  • Setter
    Orchestrates the offense of the team. Aims for second touch with the main responsibility of placing the ball in the air where the attackers can bring the ball into the opponent's court for a point
  • Libero
    The defensive specialist of the team responsible for receiving an attack or serve
  • Middle blocker or middle hitter
    Can execute very fast attacks that usually take place near the setter. Specialized in blocking to stop equally fast plays from the opponent
  • Outside hitter or left-side hitter
    Attacks from near the left antenna, is usually the most consistent hitter on the team and gets the most sets
  • Opposite hitter or right-side hitter
    Performs the defensive task for a volleyball team in the front row. His/her primary responsibilities are to put up a well-formed block against the opponent
