+evidence for effectiveness from a meta-analysis involving 65 studies and around 6000 participants. those who took antipsychotics had relapse rate of 27% compared to those who took a placebo and had a relapse rate of 64%. This demonstrates the effectiveness of drug therapy in reducing symptoms and the risk of relapse. as a meta-analysis was used it means that it has high generalisability due to the large sample ( low risk of individual differences). Yet, large number of studies were used, it is difficult to establish reliability as a range of different methods were used for each study.

-ross and read argue against medication as a treatment for schizophrenia. They believe that if an individual relies on medicine as a treatment for schizophrenia, they are likely to ignore other factors that contribute to the condition such as stress or trauma. This means they may neglect better forms of treatment to target psychological factors, such as cbt or family therapy which can lead to higher rates of relapse. Therefore, this means they may not be getting the best possible method of treatment for themselves, which can lead to a lower quality of life.
