Hypotheses

    Cards (7)

    • Non-directional hypothesis
An experimental hypothesis that states there will be a clear difference but that does not specify which direction an experiment will go in. Also known as two-tailed.
      e.g:
There will be a significant difference between the number of words recalled correctly (out of 10) between male and female participants
    • Directional Hypothesis
An experimental hypothesis that states there will be a clear difference and is specific about which direction it will go. Also known as one-tailed.
      e.g:
Female participants will correctly recall more words (out of 10) than male participants.
    • What are hypotheses formed using
      Existing research and inferences
    • What is an experimental hypothesis
A prediction of the expected outcome of the research
    • What is a null hypothesis
A hypothesis that is written in case the experimental hypothesis fails. It means there is still something for the researcher to write up after the experiment.
e.g: There will be no significant difference between the amount of words correctly recalled (out of 10) between male and female participants. Any differences found will be due to chance
    • how many hypotheses are written for every experiment
      two
    • In a hypothesis what should the variables be?
      operationalised
