Genetic explanation of OCD AO3

  • +research support.
There is evidence from a variety of sources that strongly suggests that some people are vulnerable to OCD as a result of their genetic makeup. Nestadt reviewed twin studies and found 68% of mz twins shared OCD opposed to 31% dz twins. Family studies have found that a person with a family member diagnosed with OCD is about 4X more likely to develop it as someone without it (Marini and Stebnicki). These studies suggest there must be some genetic influence on the development of OCD.
  • -environmental risk factors.
OCD doesn't appear to be entirely genetic in orgin and it seems that envionmental risk factors can also trigger / increase the risk of developing OCD. Cromer found that over half of the OCD clients in their sample had experienced a traumatic event in their past. OCD was more severe in people with one or more traumas. Therefore genetic vulnerability only provides a partial explanation for OCD.
