  • patient is NWB on their right leg with elbow crutches following hip surgery. Teach them to walk with crutches for the first time - WALKING WITH ELBOW CRUTCHES
    • 2 pairs of crutches - one for you to demonstrate, one for pts

    • 3 point gait is better than 2 point gait during early stage
    • 3 point gait = crutches forward first, then injured leg, then good leg
    • when walking backwards pts should walk in 2 point gait
    • 2 point gait = good leg back first, then injured leg along with crutches
  • patient is NWB on their right leg with elbow crutches following hip surgery. Teach them to walk with crutches for the first time - WALKING WITH ELBOW CRUTCHES
    • to sit down, step back with good leg until you feel the edge of the chair
    • then make the H shape with crutches on affected side
    • then reach down with the good side

    • SAFETY CHECK
    • shouldn't be able to move the ferrules at all
    • need to make sure theres no wear in the holes
    • the poppers should be able to come out
    • the handle shouldnt be able to move around
    • the handle pivot should be firm
    • no damage or loose bolts by the elbow cuff

    • limb doesnt touch the ground, but still trying to normalise gait as much as possible
    • crutches and injured leg move forward (injured leg is not placed this time)
    • then good leg swings through being placed in front
    • need to flex the knee slightly and dorsiflex slightly of the injured leg

    • TELL AND EXPLAIN TO PATIENT THAT THEYRE NON WEIGHTBEARING!!!!
