  • What is linguistic determinism?

    The claim that speakers of different languages are constrained to think and perceive in certain ways because of their specific language.
  • What is linguistic relativity?

    Weaker version of linguistic determinism. The claim that different languages shape or bias the thoughts of its speakers. Language does not fundamentally restrict our perceptual abilities, more creates a bias.
  • What is thinking-for-speaking?

    Weakest version. Different languages shape thoughts of speakers while speaking. (whereas linguistic relativity focuses on the impact of language on non-linguistic thinking)
  • Our perceptions of colour and sounds demonstrate categorical perception. CP is revealed when we perceive discrete categories in the world when in fact the world is continuous. E.g. perceived differences among wavelengths that fall into different categories are exaggerated
